NY Times Interviews Rob

DESPITE the best efforts of Summit Entertainment’s publicity team, which has a third “Twilight” movie to promote, it took more than a month to corral the heartthrob star of the franchise for an interview. Robert Pattinson, various handlers explained, was at the mercy of a chaotic shooting schedule for “Water for Elephants,” his biggest non-“Twilight” picture to date.

Fair enough. A guy’s got to work. But Mr. Pattinson was also not particularly eager to chat for the quadrillionth time about Edward Cullen, the tenderhearted vampire he will reprise on June 30 in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” When he was finally able to break away from the circus (the setting of “Water for Elephants,” not the throng of paparazzi and hyperventilating girls who trail him around), Mr. Pattinson seemed to have a bit of “Twilight” burnout.

“It can get a little boring,” he said softly over coffee at the Four Seasons hotel here, referring both to playing an unchanging vampire and to chewing over the Cultural Importance of It All. “The good news is that the whole thing is done in seven months.”

Not that he’s counting the days or anything.

Fortunately for fans (and Summit) and unfortunately, it seems, for Mr. Pattinson, the tally is short by about a year. Filming may wrap up on the “Twilight” series in seven months, but Summit has decided to split the fourth (and final) “Twilight” novel by Stephenie Meyer, “Breaking Dawn,” into two parts. So Mr. Pattinson will probably be out hawking the final installment in the summer of 2012.

Please don’t misunderstand him. Mr. Pattinson, 24, is fully aware that he probably would not have much of a career without the “Twi-hards,” as the mostly female following of the movies are known. His only role of note prior to Edward Cullen was a bit part in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” as Cedric Diggory, the doomed love interest of Hermione. To achieve this level of success so soon after coming to Hollywood — “Twilight” and “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” took in a cumulative $1.1 billion at the global box office — is the rarely achieved dream of young actors everywhere.

But the searing, worldwide fame that has come with the franchise has left him emotionally raw. Hunted by the tabloid media (“R-Patz Cuts His Hair!”), Mr. Pattinson changed hotels six times in the month and a half he has spent in Los Angeles filming “Water for Elephants.” He arrived for coffee wearing both a baseball cap and sunglasses to cover his floppy locks and haunting good looks, and he immediately vetoed a booth hand picked by a publicist for its privacy as too public. “Kris is better about dealing with photographers than I am,” he said, referring to his equally sought after co-star, Kristen Stewart, after finally settling on an outdoor nook surrounded by tall hedges.

“I’ve learned to let it go a bit, but I’m still really bothered by it,” he said. “The more you are exposed, the more people irrationally hate you, I think we reached a point, a peak, with ‘New Moon’ where the stories became so saturated into the culture that it started to feel normal. It’s like the tabloids don’t know what to write anymore because they’ve used up all their scandals.”

He also worries about getting pigeonholed as nothing more than a teen idol. Sure, he excels as a pale brooder in the gooey “Twilight” movies, as evidenced by how fully Ms. Meyer’s legions — the books have sold about 100 million copies worldwide since 2005 — have embraced him. But Mr. Pattinson talks about a desire to play “characters that are not parodies,” and he would love to do a comedy with Todd Solondz (“Welcome to the Dollhouse”). He would like to have a career like Joaquin Phoenix, somebody who makes unorthodox roles pop. (That’s when Mr. Phoenix is working in front of the camera at all and not pursuing other interests, like music or showing up all bearded and bizarre on the “Late Show With David Letterman.”)

To this end the London-born Mr. Pattinson has been busy accepting roles that seem linked only by a quirky diversity. In “Water for Elephants,” an adaptation of Sara Gruen’s novel, he plays a veterinarian who joins a Depression-era circus after his parents are killed. The indie “Bel Ami,” from the Maupassant novel, co-starring Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci, has him playing an unscrupulous social climber who rises to power in Paris by manipulating wealthy women. A possible role in a western called “Unbound Captives” calls for him to speak almost entirely in Comanche.

“I do think the teen idol thing is something that Robert Pattinson needs to worry about,” said Jeanine Basinger, the chairwoman of the film studies department at Wesleyan University and the author of “The Star Machine.” “The question is whether an actor is so perfect at one thing at a particular point in time that the audience refuses to accept him as anything else.”

She rattled off a list. Christopher Atkins, who shot to fame (with Brooke Shields) in “The Blue Lagoon” but was soon forgotten when he tried other roles. Corey Feldman, along with most of his “Lost Boys” castmates. The verdict is out on Zac Efron, who next appears in the drama “Charlie St. Cloud.” Worrying that “Footloose” was too similar to “High School Musical,” Mr. Efron bailed on the remake and has been absent from the big screen for over a year.

“Usually the guys who have the looks to be teen idols don’t grow up to look like what we think of as rugged leading men,” Ms. Basinger said.

There is hope. Leonardo DiCaprio, whose post-“Titantic” adoration is probably the closest thing to what Mr. Pattinson has experienced, struggled to move beyond Jack Dawson (remember “The Beach”?) but successfully evolved by picking gritty roles and teaming with Martin Scorsese in movies like “The Aviator,” “The Departed” and “Shutter Island.”

“Water for Elephants,” which also stars Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz, is awaiting a release date from 20th Century Fox. It’s the kind of serious literary role that could bring critical attention and stretch minds about Mr. Pattinson’s range. “There is a profound vulnerability about Rob and his mannerisms, and that makes him supremely accessible,” said Elizabeth Gabler, president of Fox 2000, the studio unit making the film. “He also has an innate kindness about him that is wonderful in this role.”

Mr. Pattinson has clearly enjoyed working on something else. He lit up when talking about the shoot, mentioning a scene in which a lion had to bite his arm and another where he had to spend hours shoveling horse manure — an unsettling detail given the grimy condition of his fingernails. “It feels like everyone is an Oscar winner except me,” he said of the cast and crew.

Much is riding on “Water for Elephants” because his leading roles outside of “Twilight” have disappointed or failed at the box office. The inexpensive romantic drama “Remember Me,” released in March, grossed only $19 million in North America. About $35 million in overseas ticket sales eased the pain a little, but the upshot was that Mr. Pattinson appeared unable to anchor a movie despite the “Twilight” nuttiness. “Little Ashes,” a foreign film in which Mr. Pattinson played a randy Salvador DalĂ (and filmed before “Twilight”), barely registered a blip in limited release last year.

The only career advice Hollywood veterans have for Mr. Pattinson is to keep doing what he is doing. “Continuing to take different kinds of roles and continuing to take chances will ultimately work,” said Allen Coulter, who directed “Remember Me.” “People unwilling to see him as anything but Edward Cullen will eventually be worn down.”

Part of Mr. Pattinson’s challenge is undoubtedly the vampire. The only movie franchise that remotely compares to “Twilight” in terms of popularity and the number of films starring the same cast is “Harry Potter.” But as the “Harry Potter” stories have progressed, Daniel Radcliffe has been allowed to grow up. By his “Twilight” character’s very nature — a vampire who doesn’t age — Mr. Pattinson is largely stuck.

“I hope it doesn’t start looking ridiculous,” Mr. Pattinson said, referring to himself growing older but playing the same character.

Audiences can judge for themselves at the end of this month when “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” arrives at the multiplex. The second movie was more about the chemistry between Bella, the sullen high school student (Ms. Stewart), and Jacob, the werewolf (an often shirtless Taylor Lautner). The third movie, filmed at a cost of $68 million and directed by David Slade (“Hard Candy”), is about the triangle: the push and pull of Ms. Stewart’s character between her vampire boyfriend and werewolf admirer.

“As Rob has acted more, he has become less conscious of the camera and more connected to the character,” said Wyck Godfrey, a producer of the first three films. Mr. Pattinson’s confidence is growing, he said, but the actor can still be self-deprecating to a fault. “Rob comes out of every scene thinking, ‘Oh God, that was a disaster.’ ”

“Twilight” fever shows few signs of letting up. Advance sales are on a par with “New Moon,” and the number of licensing deals (Burger King, Vitamin Water, Volvo) is enormous. “Eclipse” may open on a similar scale as “New Moon”; the franchise has probably matured, analysts say. But the last two movies opened during the school year, and the hope is that a marquee summer slot — the Fourth of July weekend — will generate repeat business that dwarfs the other films.

Mr. Pattinson won’t have much time to parse the results, much less take a six-month vacation, which is what Mr. Godfrey said the young actor needs. Production for “Breaking Dawn” starts as soon as October.

Robert ITN Interview

Robert Pattinson has been talking about changes to his character Edward in the upcoming new Twilight movie Eclipse.

The star of the vampire series is back for the third film, along with his co-stars Kristen Stewart (Bella) and Taylor Lautner (Jacob).

Eclipse picks up where New Moon left off with a budding love triangle between their three characters.

24-year-old Robert, who has now coined the nickname R-Patz, says this film will see his brooding vampire Edward expressing his anger a lot more:

"Up until this point in the series, every bit of aggression and rage and every time where Edward feels he's going to lose control of himself, he always reins himself back in. It's easier to play in this one, because he's more of a normal person, he acts upon his instincts" the actor says.

Meanwhile Kristen Stewart, who is rumoured to be dating R-Patz in real life, says she is pleased that the love between Bella and Edward has grown through the series:

"What I really like about the love triangle, and what it does for the love story in the movie is that she thinks that there could absolutely be no one else for her and that she somehow got so lucky to find this eternal... like somehow their love is more important than other people's because it's like, more than human," says Kristen.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is out in cinemas on June 30.

New Eclipse Clip

Rob Interview with German Glamour

Robert Pattinson, 24, likes to spend his day in bed rather than attending an interview. However he made an exception for us.

It was a non-recurring chance! Over 250 readers sent us questions online they'd like us to ask our Onscreen-Vampire Robert Pattinson. Then again we are sorry to say: marriage proposal couldn’t be transferred during that 18 minutes and 4 seconds.

„No personal questions!“ Robert Pattinson‘s agent announced in a kind of harsh american english way and was about to connect us with Robert Pattinson by phone. 80% oft the questions on the list were more or less of a personal nature, sent in advance by the (female) readers. I tried to calm down the lady on the phone, anyway. The vivid disputed relationship with Pattinson's „Twilight“ –partner Kirsten Stewart really did not met the interest of our readers that much. Yet his work did including the third part oft he crazy succesful Vampire Saga ‘Eclipse‘. It’ll premiere July 15th in Germany. Two months in advance like it should be with all that Twilight Hype the start of ticket sales and our interview were on the on the same day, on Robert Pattinsons birthday.

The rather hesitant „Hello…?“ on the other end of he line was a slight hint somebody probably did some partying the night before or might be actually shy.

Hi Robert! Happy Birthday! We hope not to bother you too much today..
„Oh, thanks very much“, laughs a bit nervously. „No you don’t, I’m sitting in the car right now on my way for to the elephant training.“

Elephant Training? "I have to learn how to teach them tricks – for the next movie 'Water For Elephants'. Die-hard Pattinson-Fans know the actor is preparing for the character as a student of veterinary medicine who joins a travelling circus. That‘s why he has little time for Q&A: Before that he completed the period drama ‚Bel Ami‘ and there’s also coming up a Western with Hugh Jackman and the last Part of Twilight.
How do you make decisions for a new project?
"That‘s a matter of luck. Reading most of the scripts I know after 15 pages where a plot is going to. It simply has to feel differently. How the dialogues are written – these are indications of quality to me."

Our readers would like to know what the biggest challenge was for during a movie so far.
In 'Eclipse' there was a scene I as the telepathic vampire had to keep track with a battle reading the thoughts of 40 persons at the same time making really strange expressions with my face, so you see…“ And there was one of those moments you really hate intervieweing by phone, the following words were sad to say incomprehensible because oft he noise.

Hello? Hello? Are you still on?
The agent joined into the conversation: „ Sorry there was a disconnection. Ah, Robert is calling back now“

Hello again? Can you hear my now?
Yes.

Good. I’d like to continue with the questions of our readers. You are interested in music. Will you make an album sometime.
Eerrhm yes I think I do. I wrote a lot songs but have to find the time for all that. Movie and music I cannot do both.

What was the first CD you ever bought?

Billy Oceans Greates Hits but that was a tape at that time.

Do you have a favorite song?
Beside You‘ by Van Morrison“ Kristen Stewart was doting about that particular poignant song in an interview recently, by the way.

What kind of people influence you?
Van Morrison by any means. And…mmh.. Who else? Jean-Luc Goddard the director. A caucasion Blues muscian and the most influential filmmaker of the 60s? Actually not something one would expect by an Blockbuster Hero.

Are you a little relieved by the fact that the finale of Twilight is within sight?
I got mixed feelings about that. Lately I had to do some re-shoots for Eclipse, I noticed how much I got used to Edward. It‘ll be weird. All of my colleagues are really close to me. As a matter of fact this a crucial part of my life. Until the whole Hype is over that‘ll take certainly at least two years.

Is there something irritating about the role?
What’s coming aling with it. The Make-up bugs me. You feel trapped under all that cover up.

By the way one of our readers wants to know how much time you spend in the bath in the morning
That depends what I did the night before.

Okay when you were partying that is?
Sometimes I have to spend the wohl day there.

How does a good day look like in your life?

It doesn’t start befor 10am in any case. Usually I like every day which gives you the feeling to achieved something. Days to remember are good days.

Do you recall a particular crazy moment with the fans?
I think the most freaky experience was in Germany during the promotion tour for New Moon last November. Extremly funny: At the Olympia Hall in Munich. 30 000 people deafening screaming Chris Weitz our director, Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stwert and I had nothing to do but standing there waving.

Are you replying you fan mail by yourself?
I’ll try, yes. When I’m at home in L.A. or staying with my parents in London. Taking some time get on of thoses boxes, which stand over a year at the agency. So if somebody gets an answer by me it’ll be rather late. I do keep all of these letters but I cannot answer more than 40 in a row.

One reader asks for you favorite dish.
I don’t eat Desserts. Never like them very much.

You do like Ray-Ban-Wayfare Shades as one can see on the Paparazzis pictures. How many do you own?
There was a time I wore my mom‘s Wayfarer shades. When the people from Ray-Ban noticed they sent my a whole box two and half years ago. They have all gone by now, disappeared during travelling, a lot of them stolen and the others I lost. There a just two pairs left.

What is most annoying question you have been asked?
Uuh- I don’t know yet. I have not heart one today I would recall otherwise.

I am really gladStill I have one: Do you believe Vampires exist?

What about true love at any rate?
Yes, I believe that is definitely possible.

Are you happy with you current life? Do you wish it to continue like that for the next decade?

Mmh, yeah, pauses for a moment I am, yes I am definitely happy. Things change with every situation in life. Some of them are much clearer to me now than a few years ago which I am very glad about.

The best and worst aspect about beeing famous? The best there is I have lot of work I can do. I have controll about what to do and I don’t have to accept everything I am offered. The worst aspect is you get paranoid meeting new people. You never know their true intentions.

Have you made bad experiences with that?No actually I have not. I’ve always been really careful. I was never the accessible type. One has to be on one’s guard.

Right on cue the distinctive voice of the agent intervenes: „Last question!“ Last question right now, indeed.

Okay. What three things you like wo do in your life?
Defintely make an album, direct a movie and find a religion.

How would that (religion) be like?
How it would look like…that I don't have to pay taxes ever again.

We wish you all the best for that and have a happy birthday!
Thanks I will have that.

Entire Show of Rob on Leno

There's a lot of hate going around towards Emma Roberts because of how she acts towards Rob on Leno. She even had to delete her twitter account because she was getting crazy threatening messages calling her a cunt. I don't agree in people sending childish, threatening messages on twitter but she was pretty snarky & bitchy towards him.

@jittzpattzing described it best on twitter this morning...She started the whole thing w a hesitation ab the hug he was gonna give her, then she deprecatingly says "oh yes, VERY exciting" to leno about meeting Rob (DEF sarcastic), then she makes the Jacob comment & gets the audience into it, then throws in the snide hair comment knowing that's a sore point for him. THEN makes the comment ab not sitting next to him for the rest of the interview. Sorry, she didn't deserve that cunt comment bc it was stupid and offensive, but i won't feel bad ab calling her out on HER unprofessionalism and immaturity.

And the following is from a fan that was at the taping of the Leno, you can go to her site HERE

You wouldn't believe it but, he is more gorgeous in person. He looked ever dapper in his gray suit and skinny tie. PLUS he totally went on to dis Emma Roberts who, by the way, was kind of rude.
Watch the episode, she was totes rude about her "Team Jacob" comment and  I was proud of Rob for being quick on his toes in response.
A quick back story on Emma Roberts:
She is doing a movie with Michael Angarano and been rumored to be dating him as well. Michael Angarano is the ex boyfriend of Kristen Stewart. Kristen Stewart is allegedly dating Robert Pattinson.
So, as you can see, there was...slight awkward tension between the two and the comment only made it worse. During the first commercial break they didn't speak but only once which was strained and awkward, I found it hilarious. You would catch her kind of looking at him out of the corner of her eye.

After the second commercial break they got up to watch the musical guest, Travie McCoy. She stood there bopping to the music and looked like and idiot where as Rob stood with his legs crossed looking....bored. He once bent to ask her who the band was she replied and asked if he knew who they were. He said "no" ( duh Emma, he just asked who they were).
All in All Rob. was. hott. He even looked our direction once or twice.*Swoon*( We were front row to the right if you catch it! )
Oh, Mama and Papa Pattinson were there. They were so cute! His dad was clapping to a song but... not on the beat... and quite out of the rhythm, which was just so appropriate and endearing!
Well off to bed
Kisses.

Rob Interview with Parade.com

Robert Pattinson: 'Kissing Felt More Natural in Eclipse'
by Jeanne Wolf

Robert Pattinson may not be immortal like sexy vampire Edward Cullen, but he's not going to be forgotten anytime soon. Rabid "Twi-hards" can't wait for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the latest big-screen installment of Stephenie Meyer's epic story of vampire love.

This time around, Edward and his beloved Bella, played by Kristen Stewart, get engaged, but pesky werewolf Jacob, played by Taylor Lautner, is getting in the way. Whatever happens, if RPattz can help it, he and Bella are not consummating their love.

Let's hear it for virginity.
"Edward is old fashioned. Nowadays, everyone just goes around screwing everyone for no reason. I guess Edward doesn't really want to sort of cheapen his relationship with Bella, even though she's pushing him to go all the way. He's got this certain idea of how it should go with the love of his life. He wants to do it right and not just follow his base instincts. I guess I'm a bit old fashioned in that way as well."

But that didn't stand in the way of a lot of lip-locking.
"Kissing felt a little bit more natural in Eclipse, even if there was plenty of it. In New Moon and Twilight it was always like, 'Oh, I'm gonna kill you if I kiss you' or something. It was always kind of odd. But, in this one, they both understand their situation a lot more, which makes it easier. It's the first time Kristen and I have been able to just act like a normal couple."

So are they a couple off-screen?
"I guess people like stories, that's my basic conclusion. They just want everything in our lives to be like Twilight. The truth is...that I wish I had a few more hours of sleep today so I could think of a better answer. I'm always so exhausted all the time. Lack of sleep is like taking a Valium."

They have their differences.
"Kristen brings like a lot of herself to Bella, probably more than I do to Edward. She's not the Bella I imagined from reading the books in which she was much more of a damsel in distress. Kristen's quite a lot tougher, which I like. I'm really sort of constantly working to get into my character and it just seems to come much more naturally to Kristen. Her mind works completely differently. She can feel things immediately, and I'm more cerebral."

Has he ever been in competition for a woman he loved?
"I don't compete. I'm not good at doing it. I just kind of leave it alone. I do understand that if you are the one with a girl and someone else is trying to take her away, maybe you're forced into fighting a little bit. Have I ever gotten in a fight with someone for the love of a woman? I have to think. Probably. But I don't know if it was about love or if it was more about pride."

Competing with Taylor Lautner.
"We had a confrontational scene where I sort of push him around a little bit. I thought I'd really scare him and grab him and it would freak him out. So I went to grab his shoulder, but he's so pumped up. It was too big to actually get a grip on. That was kind of embarrassing. I did tease him unmercifully about having to dress up in a little grey spandex wolf suit all the time and try and be intimidating while Kristen was patting him on the head."

Coping with Twi-hards.
"I kind of made the transition in my head of not being freaked out by it. If you're just a normal person walking down the street and everybody starts screaming at you, you'd be like, 'What is going on?' But when it happens so often to you, you kind of actually look at people's faces and see that they're enjoying themselves, and it makes everything so much easier to accept. Everything becomes a lot easier."
